Is there a more universally loved annual television event than Discovery Channel‘s “Shark Week”? We think not. Brands must agree because over the last two weeks, we’ve seen several creative examples of brands both big and small that weren’t afraid to take a bite out of the 26-year-old TV institution known to the socially savvy as #SharkWeek.
We’ve rounded up five of our personal favorites here, just in case you haven’t seen them lurking in the murky internet waters this week. We’ve included Tide‘s clever Vine video, Arby’s tempting tweet pic, and a few other surprises–including a kitty dressed in a shark costume riding around on, you guessed it, a Roomba. Volkswagen is this year’s sponsor (#VWSharkWeek), so it makes sense that they really sunk their teeth into creating the fun, interactive branded content that’s being featured on both Discovery’s website and their own homepage and social channels.
It should be noted that while we think this video is awesome and love the fact that it goes viral every year for #SharkWeek–we think it’s a bit of a missed opportunity on Roomba’s part because they don’t appear to be taking advantage of all the buzz by creating their own #SharkWeek campaign. We did, however, notice that they posted about the video on their Facebook page. Just saying… Enjoy!
