According to a recently released study by Shareaholic, Pinterest, the social bookmarking site brimming with brides, crafty DIYers, fashionistas and designers alike, has now surpassed YouTube, Reddit, Google+, LinkedIn and MySpace in terms of the site’s percentage of total referral traffic for January.

Overall, Pinterest accounted for 3.6% of referral traffic, while Twitter just barely beat out the new kid on the social block with 3.61% of referral traffic, according to Mashable. It should also be noted that back in July 2011, Pinterest generated about 0.17% of referral traffic.

With numbers like this, it’s no wonder that more and more brands are starting to take a more active interest in this growing social platform. So, how can your brand take advantage of Pinterest? The first step seems clear: sign-up! Accounts are still being granted by invite only, with most people observing a three-to-four day waiting period.
